Roger Williams will offer what it calls fresher, tastier food in the Commons today with the launch of the Eat Local Challenge. Bon Apetit Management Company says it will offer lunch made entirely of locally-grown ingredients. The advantage, they say, is that local food is more flavorful than food shipped from throughout the country. Eating locally also cuts down on non-renewable resources wasted in transporting food. More information will be available in the Commons this afternoon.
Gas prices across Southern New England have increased for the first time in 10 weeks.
AAA Southern New England says a gallon of self-serve regular unleaded gas averages $2.67 in both Rhode Island and Massachusetts. That’s 2 cents more than last week’s average and 13 cents below the national average.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says he was insulted and treated unfairly during an appearance at Columbia University Monday. The school’s president sharply criticized him before a large crowd for behaving like a “petty and cruel dictator,” taking him to task over Iran’s human rights record and Ahmadinejad’s reported denial of the Holocaust. The Iranian president brought controversy to the Columbia forum when he questioned the official version of the 9/11 attacks. He got a laugh from the crowd when he denied the existence of homosexuals in Iran. The US government has recently accused Iran of developing nuclear weapons and helping Shiite militias in Iraq target US troops. Iran has denied the claims.
Police arrested an 18-year-old in the weekend shooting of two students at Delaware State University Monday. Loyer D. Braden, a student at the school, was charged with attempted murder, assault and reckless endangerment, as well as a gun charge. The injured students remain in stable and serious condition at a Delaware hospital.
People who don’t get enough sleep are more than twice as likely to die of heart disease, a British study released Monday found. Although the reasons are unclear, researchers said lack of sleep appeared to be linked to higher blood pressure, which raises the risk of heart attack and stroke.

But the Patriots brought home some good news for New England Monday, beating the Buffalo Bills, 38-7.
