FRIDAY, Oct. 5

Roger Williams is set to host a media symposium this Columbus Day Weekend, an exploration of new media brought about by new technology. Presentations, hands-on workshops, dancers, singers and more are all scheduled for the symposium. It happens Saturday and Sunday at the New Academic Building. Waterfire will take on special meaning Saturday when the Providence attraction lights up for Flames of Hope, an event to benefit breast cancer research. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The event starts at 5:30 at the State House.

Gambling could become an all-night affair in Rhode Island if one state legislator has his way. Sen. Paul Moura is set to introduce legislation that would allow 24-hour gambling at Newport Grand and Lincoln’s Twin River.

Embattled Idaho Sen. Larry Craig has vowed to finish his term in office, despite mounting political pressure to resign. Thursday, Craig said he believes he can still do his job. In June, he was arrested in a men’s room at a Mineapolis airport for allegedly seeking sex.

Olympic gold-medalist Marion Jones admits to using steroids before the 2000 Olympic games. Jones said she will plead guilty Friday to two counts of lying to federal agents about the drug use. She could lose the five medals she won in Sydney, Australia.

THURSDAY, OCT. 4

Online elections for freshmen Student Senate and Interclass Council continue today on myRWU. 10 freshmen are vying for just four seats on the Senate. Elections close at midnight. For continuing coverage on the elections and the results, stay with WQRI and pick up the Hawk’s Herald, on stands now.

Ishmael Beah says he was a child soldier. At just 12 years old, the Sierra Leone government gave him a gun and sent him off to fight a civil war. Tonight at 7, Beah, now 26, was scheduled to tell his survival story at the Roger Williams Recreation Center. His book, A Long Way Gone, chronicles his years as a child soldier before being rescued in 1996 by UNICEF.

President Bush is under fire from both Democrats and Republicans after he vetoed a bill Wednesday that would have expanded children’s health insurance–a move Senate Majority leader Harry Reid called “heartless.” Bush argued that the $35 billion bill was too costly. Democratic leaders said they would override the veto within the next two weeks.

Facebook could be facing a consumer fraud charge for failing to protect young people from sexual predators. New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo subpoenaed the popular social-networking site last week, claiming it has been uncooperative with law enforcement officials who want the Web site made safer. Facebook says it is working on technology that would protect its users.

WEDNESDAY, Oct. 3

Audio is back up and running today. NOTE: Most content in the updates is written so that it may run largely all day without sounding outdated or strange. Obviously, news happens every minute, but it’s impossible to keep the audio portion constantly updtaed at this point. If a major developing story happens, efforts will be made to update the audio as quickly as possible. Most of the time, developments will be posted here in bold. If you see something in bold, you may update your listeners yourselves.

Roger Williams has a $6 million cruise ship up for sale. It just can’t find anyone to buy it. Donated by local philanthropist Luther Blount last year, the ship is co-owned by two other colleges. Money from the sale was to go to marine and aquaculture programs on campus. President Roy Nirschel spoke about the gift at a student forum Tuesday night. He said plans to also build a state-of-the-art shellfish hatchery bearing Blount’s name will continue, after falling behind schedule. Blount died last year. He was 90.

Roger Williams Student Senate opens up elections for freshmen today and it’s all happening online. Freshmen should see voting reminders when they log in to myRWU, the campus e-mail server, between today and when the polls close Thursday night. Ten freshmen are vying for four seats on the Senate. For more coverage, see this week’s edition of The Hawk’s Herald on stands now.

Five people died after being trapped in an empty underground water tunnel at a Colorado hydroelectric plant Tuesday. A chemical explosion and fire shut in the the workers about 1,000 feet below ground. The Clear Creek County sherriff confirmed the deaths early Wednesday.

Providence police made their biggest gun and drug bust of the year over the weekend. They seized 70 pounds of marijuana, 4.5 pounds of cocaine and seven firearms from a house believed to be a drug haven. Four men were arrested.

The leader of a local artists group has been sentenced to probation for setting up a secret apartment inside the Providence Place Mall parking garage. Michael Townsend said he and seven other artists have lived in the hidden apartment on and off since 2003. Townsend said he was inspired by a holiday ad about how great it would be to live in the mall.

Roger Williams women’s volleyball lost a five-game match to Salve Regina University Tuesday. Senior Amy Maurer broke a record in the process, surpassing the 1,000 kill record broken only once before in Hawk history.

All eyes on the Red Sox tonight as they face the Los Angeles Angels at 6:30.

Today marks the start of Career Month at Roger Williams. As seniors inch one month closer to graduation, the Career Center has launched a series of events to help them prepare for the working world. A few of the events on the schedule include a senior barbecue, dining etiquette classes and sessions on getting into graduate school. More information is available at career center.rwu.edu

Roger Williams President Roy Nirschel will answer students’ burning questions at an open forum scheduled for Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Hawk’s Hangout. Student senators will also be on hand to meet with students, on the eve of freshmen Senate elections.

Providence police made their biggest gun and drug bust of the year over the weekend. They seized 70 pounds of marijuana, 4.5 pounds of cocaine and seven firearms from a house believed to be a drug haven. Four men were arrested. Providence Police Maj. Stephen Campbell said the arrests were “a significant dent” in the local marijuana trade.

The US Embassy in Baghdad rejected a Senate motion Sunday that called for dividing Iraq into federal regions. Iraqi leaders criticized the resolution, saying attempts to split Iraq into separate states would give way to more violence in the country.
