FRIDAY, March 7

A man who allegedly swindled three dozen people preparing to stand trial in Providence. Prosecutors say John Kluth Jr. took up to $5200 from 32 people with a made-up story about a broken lobster truck. He faces one count for each victim. 

Police saying suspicious letters sent to Congress are not linked to the bombing of a military recruitment station in Times Square this week. The letters caused a commotion because they included a picture of the recruitment station with the words “We did it.” Now the letter writer says the picture was a 2006 holiday card, referring to the Democrats’ takeover of Congress that year. 

The Labor Department releasing a report today claiming employers slashed 63,000 jobs in February. That’s the most in five years. Economists say it’s a clear sign the country is in a recession. 

CAMPAIGN 2008 

The Democrats pushing for re-votes in Florida and Michigan primaries, after those states went against National Committee rules, disqualifying their delegates. With the race tight between Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, delegates in those states could make the difference. They are costly—in the millions—but the party says it won’t pay for them. 

An Obama adviser resigning today after calling Hillary Clinton a monster. Samantha Power, a Harvard professor, made the remarks in an interview with a Scottish newspaper this week.

Women’s lacrosse wins 17-8 over Curry College Thursday. Men’s lacrosse with a 12-5 win over the same college. 

Brett Favre confirming his retirement at an emotional news conference Thursday. He leaves the Green Bay Packers after a record-breaking 17 seasons saying he’s got nothing left to give.
